Find a coder
A directory of practitioners accredited to code the MotC, for services and individuals looking to commission an analysis.
This directory is being compiled. Reliable coders will be invited to be listed here; until then, please get in touch if you are looking for a coder, or if you are accredited and would like to appear.
Reliable coders have completed training in coding the Meaning of the Child Interview and have demonstrated a high enough level of agreement with a set of codings agreed by the trainers.
All reliable coders are expected to maintain a connection with the MotC community in order to sustain their practice.
Coding is a distinct skill from giving the interview. Practitioners may be accredited to administer the MotC without being accredited to analyse it, and many services use a reliable coder to analyse interviews conducted by their own staff. The analysis is then discussed with the referrer, who usually prepares a summary for the family.
An interview is typically recorded and transcribed, then sent to a coder who has no other information about the family. This is deliberate: it gives a systematic and impartial reading of the relationship, independent of what else is known about the case.
Because the MotC is designed to contribute to a wider assessment, the coder discusses the analysis with the referrer. It is the referrer who holds the family's history, and so the referrer usually prepares the summary, allowing the coding to be integrated with everything else that is known and applied to that family's particular context. Coders can write that report themselves on request, having first been informed of the context.
Either way, the integration is the point. A report drawing on MotC coding is useful when it has been applied to a family's situation in this way; a technical coding passed on without it is not what the method is for, and the MotC should never be used in isolation to make life-changing decisions about a child.
If you are not yet trained and would like to be, see training. If you would like to discuss commissioning an analysis, please get in touch.
Listings will appear here as coders join the directory.
If you are a reliable coder and would like to be listed, email motc@attachment.services with a photograph of yourself, your name, professional role, location, and a line on the kind of work you take on.
